Canadian 10-man scrum

Post by Lizard »

I have a very definite recollection of Canada being known for occasionally packing down a 10-man scrum in about the 1980s, back when they were near the top of the 2nd tier. However, I cannot find a single reference to it on t'internet. i know it would be illegal now, but I'm bloody certain it used to be a thing.

Does anyone else remember this, or am I just confabulating the whole idea?

Yes, rings a bell. I think it was against Ireland at the 87 RWC, resulted in a try to bring the scores very close at one point, if I recall correctly.
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

That could be right. Can’t find any video online though.

Or maybe it was this I was thinking of . . .

They beat the better-known Tongans 37-8, scared Ireland for an hour and then matched Wales for long periods at Invercargill - putting 14 men into a scrum close to the Welsh line - but were ultimately unable to match experienced European opposition over 80 minutes.

Best bet would be to look at some of the more extensive highlights reels from the tournament. Nothing comes up in my google video search for that particular game either.

Remember those days when the scrums just got on with it?
