This is a bigger test for Burns than whether he got a score in the 1st innings or not. If he bats to mid afternoon or later it could be the making of him.
Can Roy keep patient? Should be enthralling.

Left arm off spin apparently. Averages 38 against it.
Stom wrote:I'd make as many as 4 changes...
Out with Denly, Bairstow, Ali and an unfit Anderson.
In with Foakes, Curran, Leach and Archer.
Buttler at 4, Stokes 5, Foakes 6, Woakes 7, Curran 8.
I would drop the same players but bring in Sibley in place of Curran in your line up. Put him at 3.
and I assume not have Buttler at 4 and find a place for Joe Root

Yeah, Buttler to stay where he is.

Yeah, Buttler to stay where he is.
I'd rather he batted lower tbh. Root at 5, Stokes at 6, Buttler at 7. But then no Foakes, oops. No, still can't see the right answer.

umpiring desperate in this match. Joel Wilson should not stand again in the near future.

3 down already, 80 on the board.
It could end up with a thumping, which would be disappointing.

Burns, Roy, Sibley, Root, Stokes, Buttler, Foakes then Woakes, Jofra, Broad and Leach or Ali
But they will go with the side currently being dicked with minimal changes.

my 'right answer' has Root at 5, unfortunately.

can there ever have been a bigger likely reversal of fortunes from having Oz 122-8 to losing by say 250 runs? Oz were also minus 16 for 3 at one point.
Buttler's place can no longer be sacrosanct, and he's no test 5.

Where do you see 60 runs coming from?

The good news is that Smith's scores have now been sandpapered out of the scorebook, and we've already won.

Agreed, no specialist batsman in that team bar Root should feel comfortable *.But he is a better keeper and batsman than YJB. He has averaged 37 since his return to test cricket, which is far from perfect, but a full 10 runs more than YJB has averaged since Root took over (13.77 since turn of the year).
The selectors have got themselves in a right pickle.
*Stokes as an all rounder is probably ok.

Again based on this game there isn't a single batsman safe in the side, and then there's the ongoing problem there's nobody better to callup. Whether the focus on one day cricket is negating technique in the test arena I don't know, but I don't blame the players for training and playing for IPL contracts given the money on offer
What's Mark Lathwell doing?

Yes, I do actually think YJB is a decent intl bat, but shouldn't be keeping (doesn't keep in ODI's great recent record....coincidence?).
I'd pick Buttler, but to bat at 7 and keep wicket.

True enough. None bar Root seem to actually have a decent technique. But then neither does Smiff.

At least Woakes can hold his head up; no idea why he was so underbowled yesterday.

He looks ugly, but Smiff is on the money in lining up the ball keeping his head still and presenting a straight bat. There's technically a concern that he has to play everything on his pads given how much he walks across but unlike Shane Watson he's not missing the ball, so it's not going to be a concern until it starts getting him out.

He's got a bad knee, and it must be bad to have rested him with Anderson already done for

true enough, but its a technique only one player in a zillion could get away with.

cripes. well there is some sort of excuse for yesterday, though none for Ali, other than him being so out of form and confidence.
