Paolo Odogwu just picked up a 6 week ban for something (oddly) very similar
Truly bizarre. On the one hand it looks like Evans has gone full Bruce Lee and booted Thomas athletically in mid air. On the other hand he is jumping for the ball and the other player runs into his foot as he fights for balance.
If in doubt, red card??

I can see why the ref made that decision, by the book and all that. But Evans wasn’t even looking at Thomas. It was a freak accident in my view.

It's maybe akin to an unintended tip tackle. If there's a bad outcome the answer is to make sure you don't do something like this again, and in the meantime plead guilty and take your medicine. As with Paolo it's lifting the leg late such the chasing player has nowhere to go that surely is going to get him at least a month off

It's is weird to have such an unusual action and outcome in a game replicate within weeks

There is a danger here that players will fly in head first in the hope of getting the other player carded.

Maybe, we'll have to wait and see if that happens. For sure though sticking your studs into someone's face is a danger right now

Up to a point I agree. There is even less control on behalf of Evans than there would be for a tackler so whilst getting kicking in the face is absolutely a red card under any other circumstances, I’m feeling more supportive of Evans in this instance. There is a point where we accept rugby is a contact sport.

I'd accept it's reckless rather than intentional, but that means it's more in the 6 week ban territory than 6 months, as for all it's a contact sport it doesn't allow that sort of contact.

I say btw I've never really noticed this sort of incident before and now we've had two in quick succession. I wonder how often a leg does come up on the player catching the ball and normally there's just nobody there to get kicked?

This used to be the standard way of protecting yourself against getting tackled as soon as you landed, it's not something which can be done in the modern game as we have seen from these recent incidents, there is no doubt it was a red card.

Having a foot up already, or lifting that foot that late?

Just watched the Dragons Scarlets game. Not a great game but the weather was awful and the last gasp drop goal by Sam Davies won it at the death.

56 mins into game 2 and the Ospreys and Blues have COMBINED for 210 M of running rugby. And no real tries. Looks awful.

Hard to imagine how things could get any worse at Liberty right now. Just like it was hard before last time they got worse, and before the time before that...

Blues tried everything they knew to lose this game. We just wouldn't let them.

Despite the weather I really enjoyed the Dragons Scarlets game. The Ospreys Blues follow on was just dire.

Good to see Owen Watkin looking like he's got some form so soon after his injury, Keiron Williams was excellent and Lydiate was deserved of his MOM award.

I am glad to hear that about Owen Watkin, we could certainly use him in the National team.

I think they said on Scrum V that he hadn't scored a league try since 2014 before Saturdays :o .

I thought I'd check this, but the Ospreys' updated website only gives his height and weight and allows you to sponsor him.
The old, less flash site used to give all the stats for each player, all the tries, points scored in every match.
Great work Ospreys.

I did check that too ;), I may be wrong tho as I did watch Scrum V at about 12:30 last night so wasn't at my most observant.

Edit, I've just watched it back and it's his first try for four years according to Nicky Robinson.

It seems pretty unlikely... but what the hell, the drought is over, however long it lasted!

WTF was that in the Glasgow-Dragons game. Glasgow guy slaps the Dragon player after being pinned on the floor.

Gave them both a yellow (which was fair), then said the worst offence was the strike so gives Glasgow a penalty, which they score a try from. Game was pretty close then, and seemed to be a turning point

Not a bad result away from home, but would have liked a losing BP or 2. But game was there for the taking

They should continue with the Pro14, in some limited fashion (eg excluding Italy) and behind closed doors but broadcast on TV. The risk to the public from such meetings would be minimal.

Christ, I'm struggling with this rugby drought, but nothing like the clubs are struggling with no money.

Ah well, this would now be illegal, as of tonight, so I guess not.

Bah!
