Rain disrupts again but still time for Archer to bag one early.Good contest now Eng have a full compliment of strike bowlers (added value with JA) and Smith's taking time-out.

Typical that the weather is against us in a must win match, especially as Smith isn't playing!

Such is the excitement for this match I'd forgotten they were starting again so soon. I suppose it's a better day 1 than the last test.

Absolutely, after only bowling a few days ago the bowlers will need it, if not always want it

Warner scored about 50 more than he should have.

eh ..what happened there ?
179 a.o. thanks to Eng new star of present ( and next 10-15 years probs.) Archer, with a six-fer.
Conditions not great for batting has to be said but need to follow this up with a serious effort with the bat.Root is due a score.

Thought the cricketing gods were against us when we had them on the ropes at 25-2 only for Warner to get away with a lot of misses that could've easily caught a nick. Had Warne nicked one a lot earlier, they may have had trouble getting to 130, but bowling them for 179 is superb though...just the slight issue of getting more runs ourselves now. Cheeky ton for Archer?

Brave, and a simply incredible player - but... shows that cricket probably needs to sharpen up its HIA protocols, given that he wasn't able to play a part in the second innings.

I'm not going to applaud a rugby player who insists on returning after a failed HIA; so I'm not sure I should for a cricketer
You are indeed quite right WT. Bit of a foolish comment from myself, considering I've had a TBI. There's no way Smith should've been allowed back out regardless of how much he may have wanted to continue.

Poor but unsurprising start as it feels England are a few down for not a lot fairly often.

Root got a decent ball but Roy again out playing a poor shot.

There's just an air of inevitability about things when England start to bat. The Aussies 179 looks kinda daunting at the moment!

We could lose this by an innings!

Imagine following on after the Aussies post 179!

A nice idea.

Does anyone know if we'd lost a day to rain does the minimum lead come down from 200 to 150 to enforce a follow on? Or is the minimum lead fixed by the notional 5 vs 4 days?

A partnership of 8 now after 45-6...that's a fightback.
It's going to be a short one (again). Smith who ?

That was a pitiful effort.
After a decentish 1st day we have completely caved in.
Embarrassing.

You pretty much have to laugh when they're this inept. Chris Grayling to come in as batting coach?

So, over to Leach.

The seamers are going to feel it until close of play after so many bowling sessions in recent days, maybe our batsman are jealous of the success of Archer and wanted to make him look bad, as in if you think those are good figures wait until you see what the Aussies do.

How many do the Aussies need here to be in an unassailable position? 30, 40?

Aussies have lowest score ever to have a 1st innings lead of >100 apparently.

Batsmen have massively let down the bowlers (well Broad and Archer).

Selectors have to take action next game.
