I don't think he does take the blame for the 3 clubs going bust, directly. But he does take the blame for everything else. It's his job. Rugby is in a shambles right now, and as the top man, his pay is high because his responsibility is high.Captainhaircut wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 9:40 am I’m somewhat out of touch on this but how does Sweeney get the blame for the three clubs going bust? The RFU have no control over club spending do they? He didn’t make these clubs give out huge contracts to the likes of DVDM, Coleman, Le Roux, Beale etc that ultimately skewered them.
Am I missing something?

The leadership at the top of the game has been appalling. Sweeney has to take a share of the blame for that. Think PRL are hardly blameless and the inability of all interested parties to come together and forge a coherent and sustainable blueprint for elite rugby is unforgivable.

Controversial take, but what exactly is the shambles; men's participation and youth participation is on the up, girls especially, and women's rugby starting to thrive. Rep teams going pretty well and lots of young talent continuing to emerge.Stom wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 10:18 amI don't think he does take the blame for the 3 clubs going bust, directly. Prem is a great comp. Europe not so much, but that's not down to the RFU. Clubs going bust a consequence of dick head management outside the RFU control....that's the shambolic bit for sure, but the RFU continues to bend over backwards to PRL who are a mare.

Maybe so. And I'm not an insider, so it may be fair to put all the blame on PRL...Banquo wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 11:29 amControversial take, but what exactly is the shambles; men's participation and youth participation is on the up, girls especially, and women's rugby starting to thrive. But the deal with the Champ is horrendous. Is that PRL? If so, I take it all back, and I think the PRL should be disbanded

The champ stuff is complicated by personalities and some odd entitlement. In reality, funding has been slashed but arguably shouldn’t have been there in the first place. The money has been reallocated to the women’s game in effect.Stom wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 1:07 pmMaybe so.
