Ok, we are about half way through the club season (maybe!). How good do we think Edinburgh are and how good a job has Cockerill done.

I'm a bit of a Cockerill sceptic (in that I think he was perfect for the rebuild job but unsure about the next step) so my views may be coloured by that. I'd say Edinburgh now have a very very good squad with depth in key positions and few real weaknesses (could upgrade at nine and ten but that may come from within). Their season so far has been decent considering that squad but they really need to be in contention to reach at least one final at the end of the season.

The aspect I am still unconvinced by is their attack against good teams. They are now quite consistent against weaker teams and crush plenty up front while having the backs to use the front foot ball okay. However, against good teams they still seem horribly uncreative. If Cockerill is ever to be a good choice for a higher job I think he needs to show he can fix this and win games where they don't have the dominance

Check out the latest rugby pod if you're interested in their chat with Cockerill. There's some chat about Russell to obviously but you do need to put up with Andy Goode. So that's your choice.

I was reasonably impressed with what I heard from Cockerill though. He's not getting carried away with how far they've come. Maybe you could say he's just dampening expectations and should have done better, but I think the rebuild job was a pretty big one.

On a side note- I actually quite enjoy a lot of the dumb social media stuff that Edinburgh put out.

Edinburgh have taken some random lock on loan from Exeter. Does make you wonder of the suggestions about CCH had some merit then.

You dont always drag your loan players back if its for a few weeks, i think it depends on contracts and lengths, but then there was some rumours of CHH leaving in a bit of a cloud but never saw anything confirmed

The game v the Scarlets should be a pretty decent game. The Embra side could still be fairly strong:
Shoeman, Willemse, Nel
GG, Carmichael
Haining/Barclay, Mata, Crosbie
Pyrgos, JvDW
Scott, Bennett
Duhan, Sau and Hoyland

Matt Smith has moved across for the rest of the season. I really hope he steps up enough to earn a contract somewhere. Was on rod the most impressive Scotland u20 players I have seen but just hasn't worked for him so far.

I just can't see where he gets another pro deal unless it is back at weeg, especially if the English 2nd tier is losing funding. Edinburgh in particular have back rows coming out their ears when you include the younger guys.

Yeah, Glasgow looks like where there may be space especially if Gibbens goes. He could really do with a few big performances in the next few months.

Decent team. I did wonder if we'd see Hickey at full back for his kicking given the weather forecast.

15. Damien Hoyland (71)
14. Eroni Sau (7)
13. Mark Bennett (34)
12. Matt Scott (92)
11. Duhan van der Merwe (54)

10. Jaco van der Walt (52)
9. Henry Pyrgos (33) CAPTAIN

1. Pierre Schoeman (37)
2. David Cherry (21)
3. WP Nel (138)
4. Lewis Carmichael (42)
5. Grant Gilchrist (146)
6. Nick Haining (8)
7. Luke Crosbie (36)
8. Viliame Mata (68)

Replacements: 16. Mike Willemse (15); 17. Jamie Bhatti (10); 18. Pietro Ceccarelli (22); 19. Fraser McKenzie (118); 20. John Barclay (11); 21. Nic Groom (10); 22. Simon Hickey (31); 23. George Taylor (17)

Unavailable: Jack Blain, Darcy Graham, Blair Kinghorn, Magnus Bradbury, Hamish Watson, Jamie Ritchie, Ben Toolis, Rory Sutherland, Stuart McInally, Rory Sutherland

Yes that is double duty for Sutherland on the unavailable list. I assume that is Berghan.

Braw try given the conditions.

Kicking has to be better in the second half. The conditions are really bad but missing touch that often is poor.

Nice simple play to get Duhan moving off the scrum and nice finish.

He has loads to work on but he's a cert to be capped in the summer.

Overall not great. But defence was superb and a win is a win on those conditions.

That Carty yellow card is almost enough to make the most dedicated lose faith in the system.

Am I alone? I would be so fed up if that happened to Edinburgh/Glasgow/Scotland.

I agree. It's barely a high tackle but it isn't dangerous or a cynical attempt to stop the try. It's just one of hose things. If the ref didn't think it was a try, just give the penalty try and move on.

Fairly uneventful game otherwise. With their pack, Edinburgh were always going to get on top in a game like that. Good to get the bonus point though and good finish from DVDM

Yeah - was probably just a penalty and therefore a penalty try. He should have passed it anyway!
