SRU have opened the purse strings big time, Edin sign Boffelli and Moyana. Will be costing more than Sutherland, Began and DVDM did combined. If only they had a decent 10

Presumably Blair for Cockers is a bit of a saving too, assuming the the latter walked and there was no pay off involved.

Exciting signings and definitely helps as we were looking short. They instantly make the team better. Just hope that the ball ever goes beyond ten.

they are serious signings. Not many as well established and as big a name since Blackadder.

Most signings are done earlier of course, but maybe they were not committing to play if Cockerill was there (joking. I think)

One thing Cockerill was good at was getting the SRU to produce cash when he asked for it.

I wonder whether Boffelli will play centre a bit. Fairly stacked Inthe back 3 again.

Maybe as a kicking coach but that's about it.

My gut feeling is he will drop back to amateur coaching

With SA rugby popular(?) at the moment, I recall that some time ago, Edinburgh controversially offered employment to a well nourished, teenage Saffer centre.

Is he still to arrive or did injury/Covid mess it all up ?

Vellacott has it all to prove. He is on an "ah shit we can't have a SQ with some remaining potential without a contract" deal.

Article with Mike Blair in TOL. Most interesting snippet was that he is planning on recruiting another fly half and that:

“One of the first things I did when I came in was take three guys – Connor Boyle, Jordan Venter and Nathan Chamberlain – out of pre season and get them involved in Super6,” he explains. “These are young guys who didn’t play much rugby last year so I wanted to get them into Super6. My plan will be to get guys games unless they’re playing for us.”

“We’re not professional weightlifters or runners, we’re rugby players, and the only way I’m going to select people is based on what they do on a rugby pitch.”

I think that has to be a positive. If Super6 is going to work, it has to have buy in from the pro coaches. I remember Townsend being good on that when Glasgow players went down to play in the prem.

That's not how I read it:

"So, the new head coach indicated bringing in a player in that position is not a priority."

Edit: ah, looked back at my original post and realised I missed a "not"! Think same happened to you in your post!

Anyway, agree re Cockerill and young players although all as we expected/knew already.

Back from a weekend in Edinburgh. Thoroughly enjoyed the game, even if it was only a friendly, can't argue with scoring 50 points. Let the wild optimism start.

Vellacot is going to be a bit of a fan favourite. He doesn't do everything well but he just looks so sparky and keen. There's a good chance that we'll beat that out of him but with Blair in charge and his evident desire to play at tempo might suit him.

Kinghorn at ten seems to be a thing now. Presumably that means that neither Chamberlain or Savala are deemed ready yet.

I really dont rate Kinghorn, he comes accross as a tall lad that could run fast but he really doesnt have the feet/side step to be an international 10. wing or FB

What’s the new stadium like? Will it survive a stiff breeze in November? Are the stantions rubbish? Ot, is it good?

I don't know. He has really regressed but I don't think he is all that one dimensional. He has also generally looked good on the wing for Scotland.

Needs a big season though.

One player I'd REALLY like to see get capped or a call up is Luke Crosbie .

I haven't seen the pre-season friendlies where he's apparently been decent, but struggle to see him being ahead of Price or Horne for a while. Dobbie is the big one I'd like to see come through this year.

Crosbie is a good shout. If he's fit he'll have a chance to get some starts at Edinburgh with Watson away for the first few weeks.
