Ths is a sneaky big game for Jaco.

He is meant to be the 10 that brings control and structure to the game and this is exactly the type of game that will need the 10 to be in control.

That should have been a penalty to Edinburgh. Their onwards onside when he played the ball.

5 tries in the first half, this is quite fun. Re-stating the obvious but Vellacot isn't half quick.

VDW needs to tighten up a bit here. Kicking too loose if that's the way he wants to play though I can see it working quite well with Lang playing like this.

Fair play to Treviso for knocking over that drop goal, but agree that should have been closed out. Learning to be done.

Vellacot is quick, but rather than repeat what I said last week..................ach, naw I'll just repeat it. He plays like a 9 coming on with 15-20mins to go when you need to chase the game. No control, and his box kicking is abysmal.

VDW is still a poor crash ball 12 trying to play 10. Thought Lang looked like he could prosper more outside a better 10

As to closing out a game, if you have not seen it, watch the Glasgow game. Just the last 2 or 3 mins will do. Especially the last minute

I think Lang was a better 10 than I've ever seen from VDW or Kinghorn, but I guess if he's looking for Scotland recognition with this move then he's wanting to focus on centre.

I hope he can make more of his skillset and physical attributes than he's generally managed so far.

Van der Walts passing off his left hand is so so poor. If he can't do it stop with the long passes.

The halve backs again combined to give no real control in the second half. One out runners, poor decision making and no leadership coming to the fore. VdW must have been fucking spectacular in the first half ro get motm.

Many of the new signings really not impressing; Immelman has been very poor, Lang out of position at 13 and De Bruin could have been hooked earlier.

A second week of leaving a win out there when a bit of leadership would have seen them over the line.

I think Blair deserves some time, after cockerel he will want to give his players autonomy to solve some of these issues.

It’s a real shame they don’t have someone of weir or Hastings at 10 as I reckon they would be so much better.

its a real shame, in fact its an f'in disgrace that Edinburgh haven't brought through (from SRU academy or from age group rugby) a professional level 10 since Phil Godman (and I'm not saying he really was WCP). Since then Glasgow have had Jackson, Weir, Russell, Hastings and now McLean.
And its not a lot different for scum halfs. Weegie production line of Pyrgos, Price, Horne, Dobie while at Edinburgh Sheil might cut it, otherwise................

Don't you mean Thompson and not McLean? And I think the WCP came through at Newcastle after merchistons, which would mean that Gordon Ross was maybe our last homegrown flyhalf that regularly started there for us, before he decamped to leeds.

Alex Blair was the one that should have been. There was such a big gap between the hype and the amount of game time that he actually got.

At scrumhalf I think that we get to claim laidlaw and lawson though.

Correction re McLean and Thomson embarrassingly accepted, all these kids look the same to me!

I'll give you Laidlaw and Lawson right enough, altho both emerged much much earlier than any of the Weegie 9s I mentioned.

New Edinburgh attack coach Gareth Barber (formerly of Fiji Sevens) is taking on a temporary spell as Fiji head coach for their northern hemisphere tour. The normal coachih team are unavailable along with the southern hemisphere based players as Covid is making travel too complicated.

Interestingly, one of his assistants will be Duncan Hodge!

Still lacking control and precision but good value for the win. Bradbury and Crosbie showed up well.

Another win for Edinburgh. Haven't seen much of the games but seems to have been a very good start for Blair and they actually get a few bonus points now. Blair also seems aware that fixtures have been kind and need to improve performances.

Can anyone comment in Kinghorn in the last couple of games? He's getting better reports.

well he hasn't been a disaster

TBF he has gone ok, but I think the quality of the opposition is a factor.
He currently looks like Hogg at 10 rather than Russell or Hastings. That is he tends to shovel the ball on as first receiver rather than flat to line and vary the pass from short flat to longer still fast and flat, and his kicking from hand control not there at all.
he makes the odd break from 10 in open play if its on (nice one last night), but his default is to loop behind a first receiver (not the take and loop a la Sexton) and take it from there. This worked ok against the last couple of teams.
His goal kicking is also very hit and miss, % success too low for a main goal kicker.

I'd say its gone maybe better than I expected, and worth persevering with.

The Edinburgh back line moved better with him at 10 than Savala, not amazingly or anything like that but better. He's getting better, nowhere near being mentioned in the same breath as many guys who have played 10 regularly but that's no surprise. Goal kicking needs to improve and he and Lang need gametime together to build an understanding.

I do have a slight problem with Edinburgh playing him there and then not treating him like their main play maker. It is a nonsense to be willing to move the10 to the wing due to injury, especially in the first half.

Edinburgh's scrum and line out (until Rambo came on) looked strong and they have some exciting talents in the backs. It's been a very decent start to the season.

It does seem really odd when Lang has played infinitely more top level rugby as a 10 too.

I rember Scotland moving Paterson from 10 to wing against Ireland once after someone got injured in the warm up.

Surely that's more disruptive than moving someone else to wing!

Jordan Venter gone to Bath - https://www.edinburghrugby.org/the-club ... I_AMIjOUSk

That it didn't work out doesn't mean it was a bad idea, but it is funny that after all the hype he has barely been seen.

£4.99 isn't a lot but I kind of resent paying on top of everything else. Hows Savala doing? Big test for him and quite a big vote of confidence with vdw on the bench.

Opportunity for Bradbury to step up too with Mata out
