The Maori are going to need to learn to catch, and very quickly, if they want a chance here. Those high balls will keep coming.

I love McKenzie's kicking routine. Watch and learn Owen Farrell.

That penalty/lineout drama at the end was the best thing about the match so far.

I can only assume that is the Gat/Howley game plan, 'cause I'll be fecked if I can see what else the Lions are trying to do.

Maori need more help from forwards.
And faster ball from rucks.
They need to give space to NMS and co.

And Ioane needs to tackle well at restart.. Twice he let Lions 8 escape 1st tackle

The Lions look a much better side, it seems like they are trying to drill into them the basics in the tight and kicking, and just hope they gel fast enough to then start working on a bit of creativity as the tour moves on.

In fairness to the Maori, they too are a scratch side. The Lions have had much more time together than they have.

Barnes really putting all his eggs in the basket that the Lions will dominate the ABs at set piece, can't go 5 minutes without him mentioning it.

Jesus this is painful to watch, one of the worst Maori sides I've seen.

Halfpenny doesn't half get some shit directed at his head and neck.

These rules are really a joke, Halfpenny's head is below waist level of a normal person, he is on his knees and bent over falling - and they still talk about the first point of contact. You'd have to grass cut to not make contact above his shoulders.

think also Kerr Barlow was falling forward at that point in time.

He was late covering space...

But can be given...

He's a pretty lucky boy to only get a yellow there. Not outrageously so, but pretty lucky.
He made no attempt whatsoever to tackle, or to get out of the way once he knows 1/2P has beent ackled - he actively dips the shoulder and ends up with the point of his shoulder in 1/2P's cheek.
No doubt whatsoever that it's a card, and about 50/50 on the colour. No fault to Peyper there though, he actively says that he can't really see the screen, so is guided by the description.

He led with his shoulder, so I'm not saying he is innocent and still deserved a yellow. Its just you can hear the TMO going through the process and the first thing they should be mentioning is as soon as Halfpenny's head is 2 foot off the ground, going "high" is not an offence. It should be a yellow for the shoulder, not because of contact above Halfpenny's shoulder and head. A red would be a joke.

Barnes on Halfpenny:
The Welshman has been extremely solid.

Farrell would be outstandingly world class for nailing his kicks.

Better...

But the Maori can't deal with any high balls! It's crazy.

Davies has been much improved, that's for sure. Though I'd still like a better handler at 13...
