You sometimes have to leave an environment to understand how to better yourself. Seems to have worked for Tandy.

I also think being a head coach is a different skill set than being a coach of a specific area.

Tandy was a cracking pro 14 quality player but the Ospreys were in a bad place when he was there.

Very much like Stuart Lancaster in that he is an awesome coach but not really suited to being head coach, no shame in it, different skills for different folk.

This. Being a specialisms coach is more technical whereas head coach is a whole different situation needing a wider range of skills. Tandy seems to be doing well so good luck to him and I hope he progresses as a top coach.

Also, as was often the case in Wales, Tandy was a novice coach, promoted too quickly and expected to learn his trade in the job. (Not surprisingly such coaching on the cheap had a bad effect on the prospects of regional rugby. The Scarlets were the first to realise this had to stop.) Tandy may well be a good coach now, having learnt from his mistakes at the Ospreys.

Totally agree. We should be giving ex players who want to coach time with lower league teams codevelop and provide them with a mentor rather than expect them to take over so quickly.

Also there's that sometimes you can do a good job as a coach and things just don't work out. Failure isn't by itself a problem, a failure to learn perhaps is.
