Post by Mr Mwenda »

Quarterfinals then?
NZ v Wales
Canada v USA
France v Italy
England v Aus

Bit of a shame there are two games repeating the group games. Good to see Italy there who will want follow up their last win v the frogettes!

Let's see if the ladies can maintain the tradition from the men's game, of France knocking out NZ in the SFs...

Was always fairly likely TBH. 2 out of 3 third places, which means the groups with the biggest whipping-girls would supply the third.

The All Blacks match against Japan this weekend is scheduled to be played at the same time as the Black Ferns quarter final against Wales. The match time was proposed by Japan Rugby but NZRU agreed to it.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NZR admitted not understanding the World Cup rules. “When Japan Rugby set the kick-off time for the All Blacks Test, NZR did not take into account ... that the host nation would play in the quarter-final two timeslot,” it read.

Utter fuckwits and a pretty telling example of inappropriate priorities. I'll be watching the Ferns for sure.

Looking at the officials - interesting that the 2 best ref.s are both stuck on the sidelines this week - presumably they'll get a SF each. This weekend will be the decider for who gets the final, as I'd expect neither Cox nor Groizeleau to be eligible (in which case, Davidson would be my choice; but I suspect NZRU will pull rank and it'll go to one of the kiwis)

NZ v Wal

How the hell was that not a red for Williams on 58 minutes?

Tackle is a little late, but fine, then there's a lift, twist well beyond the horizontal, and a dump onto her head.

Ref says mitigation for pulling out of it, but that's no mitigation if it's a head first dumping. Tackler is responsible for the ball carrier's landing, bailing out is an aggravator, not a mitigator!

Fra v Ita

France so much better, but so sloppy in the execution - until they settled down with the penalty try.
Really missing the control of Menager, Sansus and Trémoulière (no real surprise there, that 3 world class players, 2 if them the decision makers, would be missed)

Eng v Aus 5 min
Anyone ever heard of a scrum being called back because it rocks a little before going forwards?
Not "that's gone 90*" but "loosehead got a drive on before the tight head, then youy straightened the drive; so we';ll have to go again"

ETA: And eventually, England score a push-over try against Australia; all feels right with the world.

Good performance that, I reckon, given the conditions. I was nervous that the Aussies would make the wet into a lottery but the England team is too sensible for that. Shane for the backs.

Kudos to the bravery if aussie 14 who found herself smashed back by rampaging forwards several times but she kept holding on (even if her eyes were shut).

Well, that was the worst reffing display of the tournie - not biased at all, but just shit. Obviously, that meant it had a greater effect on England as we were simply more dominant; and by plenty enough to take the ref out of influencing the result.

On the match itself, England did what we needed to, played the weather, played the opposition, and didn't let ourselves get frustrated by the ref.
Job done - on to the next one.

And dammit - my recording for Can v USA has failed - ITV have stopped allowing smart TVs to use ITV Hub; and ITV Hub on the 'pooter doesn't want to show QF4...

ETA: ITV Hub pissing me off - look at the "Sports" category on ITV Hub, and out of 45 options, the WRWC is option 35, and it's 1 single highlights programme!
Behind such highlights as lots of Football from the 1980s and 1990s, mens' rugby from 2016 a documentary on Irish cycling, ice skating, womens' wrestling etc etc

After this weekends performances, neither ABT nor MCO can possibly be rewarded with the final, so assuming a Fra v Eng final is between Davidson and Neville, which can only fo to the Irishwoman (unless she screws up the North American Derby)

Right, got the Can v USA match working in the Hub.

Pretty much going as expected so far - lots of huff and puff from USA, Canada just that bit better.

On Ref-watch, Neville so far is the performance of the weekend.

Can v USA
29 min.
Ref and TMO disagree on a knock-on on the maul

For me, it goes back off the chest, then forwards off the thigh (IIRC a kick has to be below the knee, hence tap-and-go off the knee isn't allowed) - so it is a knock-on.

More to the point though, the ball then hits the foot of a player in front of USA2, so offside rather than play-on even if it does count as kicked forwards.

QF4 46 min

That's red for me. Upright tackle, no dip or step from the ball carrier, and the tackler is coming forwards into and through the tackle.

Not sure how the ball carrier moving fast is a mitigation for the tackler.
