... Delilah to laugh no more at Principality Stadium.

Seems a bit heavy handed. (The choice about the song, not the stabbing).

Couldn't they just change the lyrics to make it about divorce . . . or something non-criminal? I'm sure Jones would be willing

I guess the ban will now mean Delilah is sung even more and longer by the crowd. It could become a cause celebre for the fans in defiance of the woke warriors.

Patient : Help me doc, I keep thinking I'm Tom Jones.
Shrink : It's not unusual.

As usual, it's ragebait and it's pushed all the buttons.

The choirs won't sing it. That's all. You can still sing whatever you want to. Believe that you're "sticking it to the wokerati" if you like.

Personally I'm ambivalent. Yeah, we probably shouldn't sing about that; but then again, half of all pop music has dodgy lyrics, and there are much worse.

Gotta say - one accusation I didn't expect to see levelled at the WRU (or RFU for that matter) is being too woke.

TBH, it reads more like someone trying to be woke, but failing.

As for Delilah - if we're banning songs for troublesome subject matter, then... that's not where I'd be starting.

"Labour MP Chris Bryant, who has been campaigning for a ban for the best part of a decade, today tried to link the Tom Jones hit to a ‘dramatic rise in domestic violence on match days’ across Wales. Similarly, Richard Lewis, the chief constable of Powys Police, says it’s ‘time to sing something else’, because ‘approximately two women a week are murdered by a partner or ex-partner’."

[...]

"The ban on ‘Delilah’ reveals a shocking contempt for ordinary Welsh rugby fans. The sports’ higher-ups seem to view them all as mindless thugs, ready to be sent into a fit of misogynistic rage by a Tom Jones lyric.

Let’s hope that fans protest against this ‘Delilah’ diktat with a rousing rendition at the Six Nations this month. "

(Not that the RFU is any better, of course...)

"Hey, maybe we shouldn't have singing a song about domestic violence and murdering a partner be an official part of our pre-match entertainment."

"The ban on ‘Delilah’ reveals a shocking contempt for ordinary Welsh rugby fans. The sports’ higher-ups seem to view them all as mindless thugs, ready to be sent into a fit of misogynistic rage by a Tom Jones lyric."

Incredible.

It really is pathetic, token action rather than addressing real problems. Surely no one sings Delilah because they agree with the assailants actions?

Oh well, I suppose we could sing "Hey Joe" instead.

I met Chris Bryant once and was very unimpressed, he did not seem to know what day of the week it was. (At the same meeting was Hilary Benn. Very bright and exceptionally well prepared - he was ready to give straight answers to any question, very unusual for a politician.)

Yep. I can't help but wonder about the timing as well. The WRU is under fire for some appalling culture and their immediate response is to cancel Tom Jones.

Wasn’t it Bryant who had his picture on a dating site wearing only his underpants? Not quite the person to morally lecture people.

Apparently so, although I was not previously aware of it. I was struck by his innate arrogance and expectation of deference, but I suppose as he is a privately educated ex Conservative I should not have been surprised.

Many who lecture the loudest are the ones who have some interesting personal lives…

They played some different music over the tannoy when the crowd started to sing ‘Delilah’.

Yeah, but that's the deflating effect of yesterday's result. It takes the joy out of everything, even homicide.
