While I wouldn't make a strong case to include any Welsh players in the 6N best XV either, surely as the Welsh coach this is a case where if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. At least not in your article in a national newspaper.

I'm sure the players are enjoying his loyalty.

Even if this is "trying to get a reaction from the players" it's pretty awful timing, immediately after a major tournament.
Moronic.

Better timing than just before the next one!
He does say in the article that this is based purely on this 6 nations and a lot can change by the time of the lions tour. In the end, he's being paid by the telegraph for his articles and if they ask him who he'd pick for the Lions, he'll give his opinion. To be fair to Gatland what case could he make for including the Wales players based on the 6N standings? Some might not even play for Wales again, let alone the Lions!

I don't doubt he's doing it for the money. But I'd like to think he had higher priorities than making a tiny bit on the side compared with his WRU salary.

Even if he had signed up to this before, it's not realistic to think that the Telegraph would have sued him for breach of contract just for refusing to give them a Lions XV.
