Fiji v Georgia

Fiji making very heavy work of this. So heavy in fact they're deserving to be behind at half time. They seem to have a weird mentality of running away from support. Far too much individual work, nowhere near enough team work. Game is there for the taking of they can just screw the nut

Boys have been hitting the kava or something. Weirdly flat.

Fiji did their best to lose that but Georgia must have a Scottish coach as they kicked it away on their last play so no sympathy really.

I had to skip through it with the sound off so might have missed something, but were there not two glaring (and important) errors from Dickson:

1. Georgia disallowed try for a forward pass. Simply didn't look forward, and could have checked it if he didn't blow up instantly.

2. Fiji penalty to go in the lead. Fiji knock on, Georgia hack it forward and instantly give away a penalty. Surely there was no advantage. Dickson has an odd idea of advantage at the best of times.

Disagree with point 2. It’s a knock on, not a penalty so field position is enough advantage. That said, I think it might not have been a hack through at all, rather an illegal Fijian hand on the floor that dragged it back.

Agree entirely about point 1. That pass looked at least flat and was worth a check. The try could have been the game changer. Apart from that, he wasn't giving much to Georgia the whole game. Another example of refs being hard on the underdogs in this RWC.

Fiji desperately need a ten that can get them playing in the right areas of the field. Muntz was a huge loss.

I wouldn't mind that if that was how advantage for knockouts was normally played (in general, I think advantage is too long). But normally, they wait until a team has control of the ball before calling a knock on advantage over. A hack through might be given as advantage over in an attacking situation, but not normally when you are defending your line.

Hopefully, this was a bit of a sloppy one off. They have generally been okay tactically this tournament.

Agreed - if a team gathers possession and then makes the decision to kick through, then there's an argument for the ref's call. As that was flailing a foot at a loose ball, it seems very harsh to say advantage over.

Agreed on 1.

And the ref missed or ignored a clear high tackle from Fiji in the first few minutes that should have given Georgia another kickable penalty.

And sometime around 70 minutes (guess) Fiji stopped a Georgia attack in the 22 by causing a knock-on with a no-arms tackle, which should have been another penalty.

The ref seemed a bit lenient towards Fiji, IMO.

England will not be worried about Fiji on account of this match (although they obviously will be after the warm-up match).

What about when the ref blew his whistle for a Georgia pen near Fiji's line, they tapped quickly but messed it up and then the ref came back for "advantage". Did that ever get explained? Offside at the tap maybe?

If it wasn't called for that, it should've been. Several miles offside.

Fiji Water Flying Fijians centre, Josua Tuisova is making the ultimate sacrifice to stay back in France to represent his country for the crucial final pool match against Portugal, and has told his father that he will not be able to attend his 7 year old son’s funeral today.

Yeah it sounds like there’s conflicting reports on that, but definitely sad news.

I’m amazed he’s staying with the team for the Georgia game really.

If true, that's pretty crazy. It's only a game.

if true, the coach should tell him to go home and not select him.

I don't think it's for anyone else to judge.

It could well be that the very last thing he needed was to sit in a plane for 20+ hours with nothing but the turmoil inside his own head.

It could be that he knew this was coming, had already said his goodbyes, and now needed his mates around him.

It could be that his national pride (and strong religion) are huge balms to this sort of pain.

From the outside, and my personal perspective, it's fucked up. But I it's really not for me to judge.

I'm sure staying for the match will be more pleasant for him than a long journey home and a funeral, but who really wants to go to a funeral? That's not what it's about. It's about honouring a human being.

What would you say if someone preferred to play 5-a-side football with his mates rather than attend his son's funeral?

Anyway it seems like the sort of thing he might regret, especially when Fiji breeze to an easy win against Portugal.

+1. The report said his poor son had a long-term illness. I expect that was taken into account before the player made the personal decision to travel.

I'd say that it's fucked up, and none of my business (unless I was a family member, in which case I'd expect access to more nuance around the situation).
