That does seem ludicrous. Some judges seem to be more concerned with the welfare of the offender than the victim.

His swimming times were mentioned in most articles talking about the assault. Sounds as though that poor young lady was actually lucky to have such a well-to-do, wealthy, white male - with a promising swimming career ahead of him no less - violently penetrate her while she lay unconscious.

Who here seriously thinks the verdict would have been the same if the name "Brock" was replaced with "Jamal"?

Cashead, calm down & stop preaching. The situation between Israel and Palestine hasn't actually been discussed on this thread. My reference was to the excessive imprisonment of native peoples in Palestine, the US, Australia and New Zealand, compared to ridiculously lenient sentences for others. That's very different. The point almost everybody seems to be making about this ridiculously lenient rape sentence is that it woiuldn't have been possible were the perpetrator not white. Hence the contrasting examples. Oh, and the other case I mentioned was about an Australian female sex offender who escapes to Israel, where she has yet to be charged, I believe. Nothing to do with the Palestinian conflict at all.

In what sense are Arab Palestinians "native"? I'm pretty sure that their Arab tribes would have displaced whoever was there before, Canaanites or Phoenicians or Hittites or whatever.

Arabs originated in the Arabian peninsula, as did the Jews, who were ethnically akin to Arabs (separated only by religion). Hittites were native to Turkey, Phoenicians to what is today Lebanon. Palestinians, with good reason, claim descendency from the Canaanites; and certainly this hasn't been disproved. & even if that were not the case; it would be like saying the English are not native to the British Isles because the Celts were there before the Anglos and Saxons (and somebody else was there before the Celts too, by the way) or that the Spanish are not native to the Iberian pensinsula because they are mostly the descendents of Roman, Germanic and Moorish occupations. What is for certain is that the region has been populated by Arabs as far back as recorded history takes us, and that the overwhelming majority have been Muslim since the advent of Islam.

I had heard somewhere that the swimmer was appealing. One can only hope his sentence is increase (assuming US courts can do that).
