On the subject of the French back row, I know it works on a left and right basis but is there a degree of significance into how the 6 and 7 roles are selected? Looking at it from an external perspective the 6 seems to play more of a tighter fetching role, staying close to the ball (e.g.Dusautor and more recently Lauret) whereas the 7 seems to have more license to roam widely and seems to be the line out jumper in the back row (e.g. Camara and Iturria) - am I understanding this system correctly?

Do they even do the left/right thing? And does it even impact the game that much if they do. It really seems like France/SA/Arg and a couple of others just have their openside wear 6.

Fair question.
I've a hunch that the French wing forwards concentrate primarily on their defensive roles, but I may be wrong.
I don't think that their 7 is what we understand to be as an "openside". If I remember correctly, the great Jean-Pierre Rives always wore 6 but played more of an openside role, but that was ages ago and times and tactics have changed dramatically since then.
