I for one am sad about this. Also suggests the football guys aren't completely barking at shadows when they oppose a Team GB at the olympics

It is a shame but I can see the rational. 7s is increasingly becoming a different code to XVs with players specialising in 7s.

The performances on tour just haven't been good enough for years to put up a compelling argument outside the emotions of the game being invented here and feeling like we need a team on the circuit. We barely merit a side on performance.

Isn't that the same with all sport though? You don't enter a side because you are good, you enter a side because you want to be part of it. Scotland wouldn't have many sporting teams if you had to be on with a chance of winning every week to make it worth entering.

Lots of sports/athletes where central funding is used in some form have funding altered based on performance. The sevens performance in the last 4 world series seasons where Scotland have fielded a team it has been very poor. The SRU don't take the full costs of the sevens team but will still be a good 6 figure sum every year for very little in return.

I'm fully on board with the emotional reasons for having a 7s side. But we as a rugby nation don't take it seriously and there are few benefits to the part which we do.

South Africa we're good though. Really had a plan with the kicking game and executed it well. We lack a flyer since Fleming retired.

Nice to see Lee Jones play again. Ferguson looked our best player but I still like the look of Baretto. He put some pace on his passes

beat 2 weaker teams very comfortably, lost to 2 really really good sides.

Still, we look miles better than England and Wales, so it will be "fun" watching the excuses, sorry rationale for a team GB Olympics 7s dominated by England

Barretto looks sharp. Fergusson the key player. Lee Jones still a superb 7s player. But we do need a couple of bigger mobile forwards - for the lineout and more able to tie in those 6ft arms of the big Fijians :?

Scotland play England and Samoa (who beat England to a QF place in the CW games) in LA in a few weeks so that'll be interesting.

Fergusson and 4 team mates were in the GB squad that did well(ish) in Dubai at the start of the 7s season in 21/22 and was in the Olympics team so those in the GB set up obviously rate him too.

Decent win v Kenya earlier although they aren't the team they were a while back. Play Samoa later.

was that not after RFU had sacked their full 7s squad and only had newbies? While Scotland let s few go on contract expiry but kept the rest on

Can't quite remember but given Fergusson, McFarlane and McCann made the Olympic squad I don't think it's a stretch to suggest they'd be there or there abouts if all players were available.

https://www.theoffsideline.com/ciaran-b ... ore-squad/

Ciaran Beattie is to oversee the GB7s mens and womans programmes.

Scottish influence in the 16 man mens squad. Robbie Fergusson (player/coach for both M&W), Kaleem Barreto, Jamie Farndale, Paddy Kelly Ross McCann and Max McFarland with Freddie Roddick, who played in the Premiership with Musselburgh whilst studying at Heriot Watt University, and Tom Williams, who played for Ayrshire Bulls involved too.
