A bit of a maverick by all accounts. He was (unfairly IMO) maligned for inadvertently creating the bland cookie cutter movie industry we have today: the box office disaster that was Heaven's Gate allegedly resulted in the studios implementing draconian restrictions on director power.

There's no alleged about it, when Heaven's Gate bankrupted United Artists, and it's only really recently that major studios are increasingly open to taking punts on unproven directors.
