Mark Atkinson Retires

Post by ilovelamp »

MA has just announced his retirement on BBC Radio Glaws.

I know he was often the source of much discussion on here but, in his prime (which came much later than most), he was some player. Almost always beat the first tackler, or was able to offload out of the first tackle, and a very good distributor.

He was the focal point of our attack for so long and I’m sad to see him have to quit before the end of his testimonial season.

One of the finishing school’s finest graduates. Came to us as a demotivated 10 and left as a Prem and borderline test quality 12. Also a top bloke by all accounts.

Bit unlucky not to get caps at his peak, victim of Faz/pseudo 10 at 12 obsession.

He's unlucky to have only got the one cap. Big, strong and talented enough to kick/distribute. Sounds like it's not a decision he wanted. Hopefully he's ok to enjoy life post rugby.

"My knee's made the decision for me. My knee and the specialists said enough," Atkinson said.

"It's been two surgeries, a number of injections, drains and all the rest of it."

Pity.

Very good player in his prime. Unlucky not to have been given more of a chance with England.

And we never did get Atkinson Atkinson Atkinson for Glaws. Shame.

Poor sod - I hope he heals well and has something good to go into.

Shame - good player, good man (by all accounts).
Hope he hasn't left it too late for that knee.
