Re: America
Trump does what he said he would not do and backtracks on most of the tariffs. Chickening out? Drunk on power? Setting up opportunities for insider trading? Just random decisions emerging from his deteriorating brain? Markets relieved. What will he post tomorrow?
Great times for options (volatility) traders.
Concentrating on China makes more sense than attacking the world (although he is still doing that at 10%). What would have been smart would be to have coordinated actions with other western countries against China. Instead he's massively pissed them off and made any cooperation unlikely for the next few decades.
So the EU is on 10% just like the UK. So much for the Brexit benefit and Starmer's amazing diplomacy.

And in case anyone was thinking that Trump wasn’t a real authoritarian:

I’m guessing that not many on here will give two hoots about the individuals, but we should all care about the principle here. Investigated for treason for daring to not agree with the President. This is incredibly dangerous and justifies Bidens mass pardons in advance.

I wonder if Trump will direct the SEC to investigate insider dealing from anyone connected to the White House this week.

I do hope, if the USA ever returns to sanity, that sane president would put an end to presidential pardons once and for all. (Admittedly this would require an amendment to the constitution, so really would need a wholesale return to sanity from the US to get it passed.)

They're claiming they aren't able to, which is laughable because presumably they're paying El Salvador to hold him.cashead wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 11:31 amNot seeing much beyond "I don't wanna."paddy no 11 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 10:45 am Have thay given any reason why the citizen sent to el Salvador incorrectly will not be returned???

which may seem like a difference without a difference; but I think that they think they can get away with this one, and set a precedent for doing the same, and worse, going forwards.
They've already turned ICE into the Stasi; now they just need to know that they can get away with it - it's what they've decided to make the test case

What exactly are the law firms planning on doing given that he's flat out ignored the Supreme Court saying to bring the guy back? His own, stacked and stuffed, Supreme Court voted unanimously that he had to undo the rendition, and he's shrugged his shoulders and said he's not going to.morepork wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 12:36 pmNope. He hasn’t quite got the point of refusing to obey the court order, he’s just saying that he can’t. Working for free and pressuring the Supreme Court to uphold the constitutional judicial power of government in checking the excess of the executive branch. It's fucking ugly here people. Civil Rights Act MkII. From the street to the court, this is being fought tooth and nail.Puja wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 3:40 pmWhat exactly are the law firms planning on doing given that he's flat out ignored the Supreme Court saying to bring the guy back? Will he decide that the courts can’t do much and public opinion is with him, so he might as well just ignore the judiciary? Dunno. I wouldn’t put it past him.

Sorry. To be clear I was referring to his base. They seem to like the idea of alleged gang members being disappeared to El Salvador. Some will probably not care if he does defy the courts but some seem to regard the constitution as sacred and might not approve.
