try from kickoff was a killer blow. Was coming though. Seemed to forget the gameplan that was working so well and reverted back to kicking (although a stronger Scottish bench had a lot to do with that too)

Gutting. But the Scottish win felt inevitable n the end, we ran out of steam.
That DG try was a total joke. Pub sides make that kind of mistake.
The turning point was about 50 mins when Carre and Lake had gone and the Scottish bench brought some extra quality. Our back row impact player had come on really early and you just felt that the team needed more energy.
It felt as well that Tandy had set them up to beat Scotland. I’m not sure he can replicate that with an opposition he knows less well. I sense future games this championship will be hard watches.

It does feel like a big missed opportunity to get the monkey of the back, but it showed what Wales are capable of, but also where the weaknesses still lie.Sandydragon wrote: ↑Sun Feb 22, 2026 8:27 am Gutting. But the Scottish win felt inevitable n the end, we ran out of steam.

The Graham try was a killer and gave the Scots an extra boost, just as Wales were tiring. Just as with France, gifting the opposition a score when we'd worked so hard to have a measure of control is criminal.
But on the other side, the set piece looked solid again, the game plan of not kicking the ball at every opportunity was an improvement, as was the defence. Individually, costellow looked good until he was injured, the back row battled hard, and Adams looked more like the Adams of old. Plenty of others made contributions too, which is encouraging but adds to the frustration of not closing it out.

Now that the red mist has cleared I've taken another look at the DG try. Sure, Scotland were onside but Russell kicks the ball in front of the halfway line. So the ref should have called it back. But we're not a serious side so the ref didn't even get the TMO to check things.
Having said that, Botham and Hamer-Webb and anyone else who should have been in that corner of the pitch ought to hang their heads in shame. Imagine the bollocking they'd have gotten from Shaun Edwards for being asleep like that. Hopefully Tandy is giving them that same bollocking today. We often take a mental nap after scoring points and this was the worst possible example of a longstanding weakness in the team.
Losing because of a well-worked try is one thing - fair enough, well played - but this was the worst kind of sucker punch and we are a fucking laughing stock for it. The Scots will have a giggle over this for years to come. This kind of thing is rarely seen because most teams aren't stupid enough to fall for it.

Overall, its great to be disappointed and not humbled. I was dubious about Sam Costelow but he certainly rolled up my doubt into a tight cylinder to make it easier to shove up my own arse. Well played Sam on that and sticking it to the many other doubters. Shame he got injured, but Dan Edwards, I think, would also have played well behind a pack winning collisions. Botham, Wainwright, Mann look like a tidy backrow. But we are short on impact players. The Scotland bench beat us more than the sloppiness and unlucky ref decisions. Reffell or Deaves would add sizzle from the bench and I do believe that if Reffell had come with 20 to go, the result may have been different.
