Re: John Hurt
Ah feck!
I was at Windsor Castle picking up a minor bauble when Sir John was knighted by HM. I ended up sitting next to him after the ceremony and having a wee chat. He was so thrilled to have been recognised.
I was persuaded by a pal to go to a pub to watch the WC quarter final back in 2015 and agreed despite a crushing sense of foreboding. While waiting for the Dirty Duck at Kinnegar to open a cab pulled up and out stepped the bold Sir John and his Mrs. we had another cracking chat while waiting (Only in fecking Norn Iron would they keep thirsty people out of a bar on a Sunday - and one of them a knight of the realm!).
Once inside I bought a round (His Mrs had a pint, JH went straight to the bottles of claret!) and we swapped rounds for the rest of the afternoon. After the game he was happy to carry on the chatter with a bar full of hugely pissed and largely disappointed Irish fans.
I asked him what his favourite role had been and he said that he enjoyed playing The Bird in The Field and least enjoyed filming Midnight Express. He was dead chuffed when people said that they had enjoyed him in things like The Naked Civil Servant, Scandal and 1984 as he felt that he was known only for Alien and Harry Potter. He was pretty happy that day as he'd just been given the all clear on his cancer.
A superb actor and wonderfully modest, grounded man.
God give ye rest, John.
