I'd broadly agree. Some positions have neorealist ic replacement in the squad. But where there is an alternative, give them a run out. Second place in the 6N is a meaningless position, so might as well give guys a go. If we start the same team as yesterday, what will we actually learn, that when properly fired up they can bludgeon a win. We kind of know that already.

With Sam likely out, I'd like to give Cubby some game time. Owens to start, Charteris to start, Webb and Priestland to start (as it is Italy), Cuthbert to go, just ago, anywhere I don't care but nowhere near the national team, to be replaced by Amos.

Cubby is a good shout, but not being part of the larger squad makes it unlikely that he will get a call. Tips is great player for the wide open games, but Cubby seems a good choice for the more physical aspects of the game.

Id be very tempted to rest Lydiate as well. The stats are good for his tackling and I did see him take a few balls in to contact. But I think Moriarty deserves a chance to show what he can do.

Squad players is definitely a good shout in my opinion.

Owens deserves a start. I put on Twitter during the game that I don't think Baldwin is the best hooker at the Ospreys, let alone Team wales.
Second row, maybe Brad and Clart. Give AWJ a rest.
Back row, Moriarty and Tips. Maybe give a different 8 a run out as well. King maybe?
Webb has to start, the difference he made was obvious. Davies' service was Bergamasco-like at times.
Don't mind Biggar or Priestland, but would like to see Webb and Biggar together again.

Cuthbert. For his own sake he needs to be a long way away from the national team for a long time. He's mentally and physically not up to it at the moment.
I'd go for Amos on the wing, he's been playing well for the Dragons.

Is there any mileage in giving Nipper an opportunity in this game? I wouldn't replace Liam at full back, but even a bench option could prove useful. In a game which is frankly pointless, its worth giving him a go and seeing if he is a genuine option or not. Otherwise, why bother having him in the wider squad?

i'm not that bothered who plays or doesn't play really - its whether they will be coached to go out & play positive, ball-in-hand attacking rugby or the usual tedious stuff

It seems a bit daft to suggest that changing 9 & 10 will make the backline perform better, the fact our forwards were finally starting to make some headwind is the more pertinent aspect of why we had some success towards the end of the game, along with Englands players being substituted and making them defensively weaker.

I'd bring Owens in at hooker, Amos on the wing, Tipuric for Warburton, Clart to return. I'd quite like to see us blood more young players but we need to win the match first and foremost (it's pointless saying it's a meaningless match, it's an international match ffs, we need to maintain a decent World ranking with the NZ tour coming up as the seedings will dictate the group we are in.)

If we want speed from the breakdown, the best passing 9 is Aled Davies, I wouldn't be bothered if he was given a runout with Webb on the bench and Gareth Davies rested. Of course, the fact is, if the team are static then the 9 could be the best passer in the world but will make no difference.

OK, so not entirely meaningless, but neither is it crucial. Ahead of the 3 test tour to New Zealand (heaven help us), it is an opportunity to rest a few players who look out of sorts, and give fringe players a go at home, with some of the first choice players around them.

After the performance, the likes of Amos, Moriarty, Morgan etc must be wondering what the hell needs to happen to get an opportunity.

It's a six nations game, people are paying a lot of money to watch it, we should pick the strongest team.
Anything else devalues the competition and the jersey.

Might be a case for resting somebody if it wasn't the last game, but I hate seeing people getting "cheap" caps, especially for coming off the bench for the last couple of minutes.

Playing some squad members isn't devaluing the game if they are currently a better bet than the regulars.

This isn't a 'nothing' game. There is prize money up for grabs - a lot more for second than 4th iirc (although I can't find the figures).

We should forget Saturday as quickly as possible - it was a bad day all round. I hate the fact that Gatland has completely blamed the players - surely he must take some blame for our consistent slow starts.

I didn't say it was, that would be picking the strongest team, surely?

Pick him on the wing instead of Cuthbert to do an ickle-type job.

Howler blamed players and the coaching staff in a press conference today. Its a fine line to judge where the greater portion of blame lies, the players aren't coached to miss that many tackles. Equally, if the players aren't motivated by the tactics, or are knackered, then that very much lies with the coaching staff.

Possibly. Id rather pick Amos to start, with Nipper on the bench to replace him at some point and let him and Liam Williams cover wing/15 between them. Both will cause mayhem to a tired defense.

Totally. He usually does this. In fact the only time I can remember him even hinting that the coaching was found wanting was when a shell-shocked Gatland was cornered for an interview after our demolition by Ireland in 2014. He quickly changed his tune later and blamed it all on the players though.

As you say, if this was a one off, blame the players. Since this is a very long-running problem, blame the management for not finding a way to overcome it.

I think our continued slow starts and lack of attacking ability can be firmly blamed on the coaches. Players missing tackles can't.
