Scotland - Improvements we would like to see

Post by Cameo »

Now the season is all but over for our players I was thinking that we are a lot better than we have been but there are still various areas we can improve on to really step up and be 6N contenders. I'm not thinking of new players particularly but just what we should be looking to develop. My thoughts:

Props: Generally got an ok scrummaging unit but looking for a little more ball carrying

Hookers: Assuming it is Brown then it is the throwing that he should be concentrating on

Locks: I think we have two of the best defensive locks in the world but would want them to develop more of an edge in attack. I think this is both running lines and offloading ability.

Back Row: Nuggety but occassionally get blown away a bit. Maybe the biggest thing is learning to adapt better to refs that dont give us much leeway on the floor.

Halfbacks - Can obviously get more consistent but otherwise I dont want them to be trying to add too many more elements (I dont think you can accuse Finn or Price of not bwing ambitious enough!).

Centres - Maybe do a bit more of the hard yards stuff to take the pressure off the pack but otherwise good in attack. Defence can be good but the main thing for me would be sorting whatever it was that broke down against England (and then again, worryingly, for Glasgow v Saracens)

Back Three - Not sure, I think they are decent finishers and look to get involved. Work under the high ball has improved but that it maybe something still to be worked on.

Bench - I'm not sure we have the same impact as some teams. I feel like the bench is sometimes just less good versions of the starters. Ideally want to offer something different

Pretty much agree with all of that.

Tom English hits it right on the head here in regards to JG. It's pretty much what I said to my old man after the 6N while discussing potential Lions. I actually think he's overrated. But he's young and I have faith he'll get there.

Safe standing in the top deck of the north east and south east corners of Murrayfield. Think it would be fun.

Oh, er, and the rugby. I think just keep doing what we're doing and see where it gets us with the two home fixtures in the 6N this year. Youth development seems to be going well and I'd like to see a few of those lads come through. Those that don't make it will hopefully stay in the game and augment the domestic league. I hope Hastings comes good, and it would be good to have options of a couple more big, ball-carrying forwards in the back row.

Longer term, it would be nice to see some sort of feasibility study for a third pro team.

I think the 3rd pro team is a pipe dream until we have 6 academy's and agreements with 1-4 championship clubs to help develop the academy's.

I hope Kinghorn kicks on to be back up FB although realistically it may be Maitland and Taylor. BK was good in the JWC. For all Tonks did well v Oz he couldn't crack the LI starting XV in the play offs and they have signed back 3 reinforcements so it isn't looming good for his game time next season.

If literally any of the other realistic 6 or 8 start the season well they'd be miles ahead of Harley for me.

I think Tom English is actually quite decent. Does a bit more actual analysis than some as well as some interesting features on players.

On the Gray thing, without being negative about a very very good player I like that Emglish has pointed out things he can improve on rather than just being a cheerleader
