New Doctor, Jodie Whittaker
First female lead in Doctor Who.... any thoughts?
For me, although it's a good thing in theory for a show like this to have a female lead from time to time (pun!), in practice they've had to revise history to do this, which I'm against. This isn't a reboot.
As for the particular choice, I don't know her. I hope she has the necessary gravatas AND humour for the job (not easy). Does anyone watch Broadchurch?

No but I'm not sure it's renowned for its humour.Son of Mathonwy wrote:First female lead in Doctor Who.... any thoughts?

She's a half decent actress, she's also in Attack the Block.Son of Mathonwy wrote:First female lead in Doctor Who.... any thoughts?

I don't watch Doctor Who but it's fascinating to see some of the ludicrous reactions to this. I actually thought we might be past the point where this was a big deal, though equally that may mean we're not past the point where a woman may be given the role for the sake of equality, rather than on merit.
That would be a shame as she's a fantastic actress from what I've seen. Hard to judge her sense of humour from Broachurch though.

Yes, I've seen that, and worryingly(?) I have absolutely no memory of her in it.Numbers wrote:She's a half decent actress, she's also in Attack the Block.Son of Mathonwy wrote:First female lead in Doctor Who.... any thoughts?

Yes, there seems to be a lot of pre-emptive sexist abuse (eg "wailing manbabies"???) for anyone thinking that this is not a good thing.Mikey Brown wrote:I don't watch Doctor Who but it's fascinating to see some of the ludicrous reactions to this. Doctor Who is full of strong female characters. This change is not going to cure a program of sexism, coz it's not suffering from it. Is it going to help society? Who knows? I'd prefer this to have been a plot-based decision rather than a political one (which one feels it is).
But good luck to her, I hope she does a great job.

Yeah, that must be why she seems vaguely familiar. I remember the character, but I can't picture her...Numbers wrote:She's the female lead, the nurse they try and mug at the start?Son of Mathonwy wrote:Yes, I've seen that, and worryingly(?) I have absolutely no memory of her in it.Numbers wrote:

Load of crap, I haven't enjoyed Doctor Who since David Tennant, the last two Doctors were garbage, couldn't watch it. The BBC have gone total pc now, a woman doctor with a mixed race lesbian side kick, what next, a drag queen as the Master? Fuck off BBC you've lost the plot.

Dr Who lost all credibility when Tom Baker got his nob out in The Canterbury Tales.
I agree with MorePork. Olivia Coleman would never have got her nob out in the Canterbury Tales.

Hmmmm.... technical point, but did it lose credibility from that point onwards or did it retroactively lose credibility all the way back to the 4th doctor?SerjeantWildgoose wrote:Dr Who lost all credibility when Tom Baker got his nob out in The Canterbury Tales.

Interesting point. The nob getting outery actually occurred two years before Baker became Dr Who. Nevertheless, I maintain my position re credibility.
You'd never have caught Billy Hartnell or Paddy Troughton lopping their schlongs out, Wyf of Bathe or no Wyf of Bathe. And as for Pertwee, the rumours of Worzel Gummidge flashing schoolgirls have, as yet, proved entirely unfounded.

Aha, I assumed this was post-doctorate nob getting outery! I must have confused it with The Life and Loves of a She Devil.SerjeantWildgoose wrote:Interesting point. The nob getting outery actually occurred two years before Baker became Dr Who. Nevertheless, I maintain my position re credibility.

I don't really get why it feels like a political decision. The show runner has decided he wants her. I'm presuming because there's a narrative he wants to tell involving a female Doctor.Son of Mathonwy wrote:Yes, there seems to be a lot of pre-emptive sexist abuse (eg "wailing manbabies"???) for anyone thinking that this is not a good thing.Mikey Brown wrote:I don't watch Doctor Who but it's fascinating to see some of the ludicrous reactions to this. I have no concern about Whittaker. I'm very concerned about having a show runner who was involved in the abomination that was series 2 of Broadchurch.

It feels like a political decision because the BBC is flying the pc flag for all its worth, I saw a headline on the BBC website just last week about how much white males working for the BBC are earning, yeah so fucking what, are they not allowed to earn more than any other people?? what is the point of highlighting something like that?
The BBC are a disgrace and I wish I could get out of paying their stupid fee every year. They have destroyed Dr Who, its shit now compared to what it used to be.
Question Time is a joke, they have an audience full of lefties, and they give all the airtime to the minorities or whoever is anti nationalist, pro EU and pro globalism.

They created Dr Who, and it's a show for kids or was meant to be so don't get your knickers in a twist.Lord Lucan wrote:It feels like a political decision because the BBC is flying the pc flag for all its worth, I saw a headline on the BBC website just last week about how much white males working for the BBC are earning, yeah so fucking what, are they not allowed to earn more than any other people?? what is the point of highlighting something like that?

Just make Clarkson Dr. Who so he can go through all of time and space offending every being with his refreshingly non-PC brand of astute observation. British Leyland can be commissioned to make a new Tardis that doesn't pick up fat birds or the coloureds.

Was for kids you shoulda said, its for everyone now. Who wouldn't want to see Davros and his Dalek legions come crashing through a time vortex, to win dominion over the earth, or see Cyber men stomping around London rounding up the population to be upgraded.Numbers wrote:They created Dr Who, and it's a show for kids or was meant to be so don't get your knickers in a twist.Lord Lucan wrote:It feels like a political decision because the BBC is flying the pc flag for all its worth, I saw a headline on the BBC website just last week about how much white males working for the BBC are earning, yeah so fucking what, are they not allowed to earn more than any other people?? what is the point of highlighting something like that?

And while we are talking about the BBC, there are too many women sports reporters, thats right I said it, tune into Final Score next time its on, half the time you will hear the shrill voice of a woman screeching out the match reports, like they are actually interested in the game, we'll have one reading out all the final scores before long, its not on.

Rambo mentioned Tom Baker, he was good as Dr Who despite what you slags are saying about him, he was also good as Prince Koura in the Golden Voyage of Sinbad.
See Baker in action here against the demented Davros, who happens to be my favourite Dr Who character, he reminds me of Mr Burns, they have a lot in common.

Is. Is for kids. Always was and still fecking is. It is not for me as I have always found it to be quite up itself and the kids who rate and rave over it to be equally so. Children who have favourite Dr Who characters tend to add little to the general social capital, while adults that admit to having one tend, in my experience, to positively detract from it.Lord Lucan wrote:Was for kids you shoulda said, its for everyone now.
Presuming you are an adult, which is probably stretching things, I suspect you are also a Trekkie, wank off over the posters of Princess Leia on your bedroom wall (Causing moments of extreme embarrassment when once a week your mother changes your single Thomas the Tank Engine duvet cover) and have the leather bound, Parseltongue limited edition of all of the Harry Potter books on your IKEA bookshelf.
I am sure I speak for many of us when I say how unerringly delightful it is that you so frequently take time off from playing Minecraft to give us the benefit of your balanced world view on here.
And please stop referring to me as Rambo. I find it deeply offensive. Oh, no hang on ... its just you that I find deeply offensive.
