Re: Dylan wins Nobel prize
There has been a competition between the newsreaders for the best segue from this story. The best I've seen so far is : 'All I really want to do is hand you over to the weather'.
No doubt Private Eye will have a complete list of these w*nkers.
Of course, the man is a lyrical genius. The flat monotone is an acquired taste....like mushrooms.

Re: Dylan wins Nobel prize
So Leo Tolstoy never got a Nobel Prize for Literature but Bob Dylan has. Makes sense. After all, they gave the Peace Prize to Barack Obomber just for getting elected...

If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

Re: Dylan wins Nobel prize
Dylan's been on some run since Eddie took over.
On those who haven't won it then I don't think Twain has won it either, nor Joyce though it's mostly an award for white Europeans, which perhaps for a Swedish award isn't that surprising. Tolstoy would have been in the running, he's had plenty of other recognition, and if one wanted to look at a group who go oddly overlooked in these instances then one could look at that often neglected group called women.
I can't say I've a problem with a songwriter winning the award, and Dylan's penned many a decent line, I hope he enjoys getting his Nobel.

Re: Dylan wins Nobel prize
Are you even aware of who won it last year? How about three years ago, or seven, eight and nine? In fact, there have been six female winners in the past 12 years. Really, I am starting to believe some people here really do imagine that it automatically makes them moral giants just to utter the word 'sexism' - even where there clearly isn't any. I've never encountered such mindless superficiality...Digby wrote:Dylan's been on some run since Eddie took over.

Re: Dylan wins Nobel prize
The prize does of course go back a further hundred or so years, and across the whole it's a wildly skewed set of winners (not that I know the actual figures). I'd also suggest noting approx 50% of the population is under represented makes more sense that noting one specific writer wasn't given the award, just a thought.rowan wrote:Are you even aware of who won it last year? I'd say there is considerably more evidence of Russians being ignored than women. I'm no great fan of Tolstoy personally, but we're talking about one of the veritable giants of literary history here.

Hardly the only giant to be overlooked.rowan wrote:I'd say there is considerably more evidence of Russians being ignored than women. I'm no great fan of Tolstoy personally, but we're talking about one of the veritable giants of literary history here.
Though when it comes to Russians overlooked the USSR at least rather went back and forth on whether it's artists should be allowed to accept such awards, and that will no have helped the numbers. And when it comes to he Nobel there are more perhaps Swiss, Danes and Swedes on the list than one might expect other than the panel has likely had a number of Swiss, Danes and Swedes.
And really any such award for best in a subjective field is always more than a little daft, whilst also allowing for some attention to be granted to the wider community.

Re: Dylan wins Nobel prize
Well, the Soviet Union is one thing, 19th century Russia is another. The latter was the birthplace of the modern novel and produced some of the world's finest writers, but the likes of Tolstoy, Maxim Gorky, Anton Chekhov, Alexander Blok, Ivan Shmelyov and Anna Akhmatova were ignored in the early years of the awards' history, as was philosopher Dimitry Merezhkovsky and poet Konstantin Balmont. Not until 1933 did a Russian writer (Ivan Bunin) receive the Nobel Prize.

Re: Dylan wins Nobel prize
Joyce never won it either, the prize has always generated controversy no matter who picks the prize up. I was initially sceptical when Dylan was announced (he was long listed a few years back) but am reconciled to the idea now and actually think that emphasising the fact that literature can present itself in a variety of different forms is a good thing.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks, and should consider changing thy fucking record.

Re: Dylan wins Nobel prize
An interesting read. I'm a Dylan fan regardless, and I already knew about his Zionist views, but there's a skeleton or three in everyone's closest, afterall:
On October 13, Bob Dylan became the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature since Toni Morrison received the award in the early ’90s. The announcement was greeted with as much applause as derision: some praised Dylan’s lyrics as high poetry while others argued that even a brilliant singer-songwriter should not be receiving an award meant to recognize poets and novelists. For those more politically attuned to the question of Palestine, Dylan’s avowed support for the State of Israel was similarly the subject of impassioned argument.

I saw him at Earl's Court in '79. The place was empty. They've demolished it now.
Some of the gig was proper quality. I don't think I was really old enough to appreciate all of it.

An enjoyable experience. Bob did a set that suited his age
There was never gonna be a greatest hits set but I felt a "calm"?
This was the first concert of McShinnersliginds on tour. Next up ......... Toots and the maytels supporting The Specials. A week later is Mosborough music festival. Headlined by Bruce Foxton..
Tom petty in July supported by some bloke called Stevie nicks. Finally a trip to jockistan for Deacon Blue at Embra Castle. Summer holidays......

I've always thought Foxton was a twat,...but it's him that wrote and sings the Mock the Week song.
