Someone Gray at 7. Webster. Basically any of the centres except maybe Cairns if he had stayed fit. Did Callam at 8 get a cap?

Err... Berghan?

Diciknson at 3 was the worst TH , even worse than Gav Kerr

Rob Dewey was inspirational in his ability to run straight into contact and do nothing else

Bruce Douglas, Andrew Henderson, Scott McLeod. Wasn't there another crap Hamilton that played lock for Edinburgh and Scotland? No not Big jim... a lanky, skinnier blonde one.

Not so sure about Scott Gray - thought he was a good player.

Sam Pinder at 9.

Craig Hamilton? You were almost there with Crap Hamilton.

Can't recall much of Gray to be fair. Just that we were whack back then and he still couldn't really break the side. Maybe that was a selection mistake.

Did we ever give Stevie Swindall a token cap? I don't think so...

I actually thought Webster was one of our better crap wingers. Glorious consolation try off a Godmanchester chip v NZ and a fondness for suicidal crash balls.

I'd add Grays on Hart to the 9 debate. Alex Cuthbert at 15.

Actually, looking back it is hard to dislike many of our past players. They almost all gave you hope when the first appeared and then tried their arses off for little reward

I remember a game in South Africa where Webster comprehensively outplayed his opposite man, a certain B Habana. The Springbok commentators were saying "Who is this guy?", a high point admittedly but by no means our worst winger.

I remember a certain Craig Moir of Northampton getting capped, Geech was asked "What made you select him?" The answer: workrate. Basically he was a grafter & nothing more.

I guess an interesting question is also who from that era might actually look like a decent-ish player in this current setup.

I feel like Southwell for example wouldn't be the worst shout when there are other, competent, attacking threats around him.

Morrison and Henderson get in ahead of those two centres for me. NDL was a step up on the competition. Dewy could have been decent but can't really argue.

Southwell looked so much better than he actually was

Fixed. Some proto-Gatland that Geech occasionally got away with (Beal on '97 Lions etc)

Southwell was hyped by some French coach as the best 15 in the world. Can't remember who though

Lievremont? Fairly sure he also said Scotland were the all blacks of the NH.

I can't remember, maybe one of the Lievremont brothers (not Thomas though).

Graham Beveridge and Craig Smith anyone? Both good honest club players who would never have been capped for anyone else. Have to take issue with mad Matt though, he was very good in his limited caps.

Nikki Walker ahead of Webster for me and maybe Fergus Thompson for hooker (seems harsh given what injuries he suffered). Fly half seems ripe for reopening some old debates.

Who was that Aussie league centre that got fast tracked in but then disappeared? Ben Macdonald maybe?

1 Traynor
2 Bryce
3 Gav kerr

6 Low
7 Fusaro or Holmes - what ever happened to Alan MacDonald, we have had some decent 7s!
8 Sad to say Vernon

9 Hart
10 G Tonks
11[ b]Cuthbert, although IIRC he was capped at 15[/b]
12 NDL Dewey Ben MacDougall misses the 10 year window.
13 Grove
14 D Fife
15 Murchie
Bored at work. Best I could come up with.

On si Webster - I always thought he was decent. There were plenty worse than him at the time. I felt that we could have done worse playing him at outside centre for a while, given some of the players we had available at the time. Think he scored against all 3 Southern Hemisphere teams for us, breaking his ankle once after scoring the opening try v Australia.

Same, always looked a bit like he didnt know what he was doing but was a bit more dangerous than some of our backs

Yep he did,

can anyone name a player since SW that has scored against all 3 SH teams while playing for Scotland

I think there is 1 but possibly 3 without googling

I think an intercept, and 2 tries in RWC
