U18 2024/25

Post by Which Tyler »

Head coach Jonathan Pendlebury and assistant coach Will Parkin have confirmed their squads for the upcoming U18 Men’s Development Camp this week.

Hosted at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, the Men’s Pathway side converge on Berkshire in two groups for separate two-and-a-half-day camps starting on Wednesday (30th) and concluding this forthcoming Sunday (2nd).

This week’s training schedule follows on from September’s front five and specialist back meetings and sets out to fortify key pathway development principles in the first U18 camp since the side toured South Africa this summer. With a mostly replenished group, Pendlebury and his staff look to implement on-field principles, position-specific rugby preparation and detailed strategy that layers on top of the experiences the players gain through their club, school and college fixtures and academy sessions.

Since the U18 Men’s last outing in the 2024 International Series, 21 players have graduated the U18 programme and into the 2024/25 U20 Men’s Elite Player Squad: Aiden Ainsworth-Cave, Tom Dye and Jonny Weimann of Northampton Saints, Sale Sharks’ Ollie Davies, Seb Kelly, Jack Lightbown and Toby Wilson, Nick Lilley and Josh Mann (both Exeter Chiefs), Lucas Friday, Frank McMillan, Jimmy Staples and Ollie Streeter (all Harlequins), Saracens’ Angus Hall, Jack Bracken and Charlie West, Bath Rugby’s Charlie Griffin, Tyler Offiah, Connor Treacey and Kepu Tuipulotu, and George Pearson of Leicester Tigers.

60 players in total have been invited to camp, with 13 of those having picked up U18 caps already this year throughout the U18 Six Nations Festival or the aforementioned International Series in South Africa. Nine further uncapped U18 players have partaken in the 2024 U17 spring camp and fixture at Hartpury College.

The opening autumn camp sees the rugby schedule complemented with strength and conditioning training with sports psychology education. The U18 Men return to Bisham Abbey next month for a four-day Development Camp before a break for the Premiership Rugby U18 Academy League.

Jonathan Pendlebury said: “This week marks the first step of hopefully many more on the Men’s Pathway journey for these players. It’s an exciting time of year, with many performances in school and academy settings that have commanded attention. We want to reward and recognise these players by affording them the opportunity to train with other players of similar ability.

“Being the first U18 camp this term, we’re encouraging the team to demonstrate self-awareness and organisation – that can be showing character on and off-the-field, showing leadership qualities but most importantly, taking ownership of their development.

“Our mantra of ‘getting better and better and better’ is pertinent with it being the first taste of camp life for the team this year. We will use this as a point of reference to measure progress throughout the campaign to ensure the players grow into their next challenge on the pathway.”

Of the Bath ones in there, Treacey is a gem at IC, Hooper is showing promise, but I'm not sure he's England age-grade yet.
Can't recall seeing anything of Skinner

ETA: Hooper is the son of Stuart and looks the spitting image, plays FH. At FH of course, I've been spoiled recently with Linegar, so I may be doing him a disservice above.

Treacey is a proper standout! Really like the way he’s plays! Obvs Linegar makes a big difference, but he looks quality.

Will have a look at the squad and chuck some names out when I’m sober.

Charlie Morgan wrote an article last week ('England have a problem at lock – and these youngsters are the solution'). In the comments he mentioned Jonno Balding and Laidlow as locks to watch.

I already knew Balding is highly rated but had never heard of Laidlow.

Laidlow is a decent prospect. He's had a very good year with Trinity and kicked on well. Balding is really good. He's bloody massive and a top talent. There's also Patrick Hogg, who could play lock or backrow. Branch Holland too looks decent.

And then above that you've Kpoku, Sodeke, Burrow, Ainsworth-Cave, Agbemile. Our lock stocks should be pretty well provided for in a few years time.

Lawrence Ogbonnaya is the pick of the front row IMO. Has a really strong technique and is coming along very nicely. Am hearing good things from Brooksby about Lewandowski

Laidlow has been mentioned already. He's become a very decent tighthead lock, and had a big season for Trinity. He's been in the U18 setup for a while now, playing up a year so to speak. James Moore is another who stands out to me. Still developing, but developing into a very good lock.

In the backrow Knight and Worsley have something about them. Knight, the younger brother of Toby, has a similar playing style, if maybe a bit more power than Toby had at this age. Worsley mixes between centre and backrow. He's rapid and robust. he reminds me a lot of Ben Earl in his Tonbridge school days, but with a better skillset rather than pure power and speed. There are a good group of backrow players, and as you'd expect a few who can play lock and vice versa.

Shields and Talbot are two very decent fly halves, both of whom have been part of the U18 squad this year. Talbot and Townsend, the Tigers half backs, have combined really well this year. I'd really call out Umaga here too, though I feel he's better at 15 personally. He does look good!

Treacey is the standout centre. Powerful but with a deft skill set. Goode is definitely worth keeping an eye on too.

Back three is very strong again. Edwards is a livewire with U18 experience, and Tamani a real handful. Denny looks pretty special, and I'm quite a fan of Will Payton, and Lochie Glackin has really stood out this year in a pretty up and down Denstone side. Another who has been in the U18 squads this season.

As ever the backs are largely interchangeable, with many able to play multi position. I've kind of gone with the primary role here, or it'd just be a mass of names.

Oh and Alex Mead. He's a new one on me, and I can't find anything on him, other than he's a forward.

U17s is a tough age group as you'll have a mix of lads who have played plenty of U18 academy and even U18 international and then lads who have not featured for their respective academy U18 sides, but might have had a run for an U17 side somewhere. They can be fringe school team players too, and spring term tends to be 7s season so you don't see much of them until next year when they become 1st XV regulars.

I don’t think they’re ineligible, but I think we’ve taken the choice to align the pathway on calendar years rather than school years because that’s what happens when you go into U20s.

I can’t find anything definitive either way.

There’s some serious talent not in the squad that have birthdays in the Christmas term. Linegar, Balding, Hogg, Rawlings, Champlain, Winters and many more. The odd injury in there too.

It’s my pleasure mate.

And as always with the pathways it doesn’t often result in players going all the way. A lot of these lads will drift into lower leagues and university rugby, but the odd nugget will go a long way. The pathway, post school is still a mess, as Banquo will testify. That should, in theory, be changing for the better but we’ve a long way to go in brining the full potential out of these lads as they navigate their way into adult rugby. We are world class at shooting ourselves in the foot in this regard. And even then still produce some damn fine players. But there could be so many more if we sort our shit out.

As always, there’s some absolute belters with regards to names. Oscar Talbot being my favourite.
Where is this being played?

Horrible mismatch so far. Our lads are physically dominant.

Finished 71-5. Had we been a bit slicker with our passing in the 2nd half it might have been more. The Scottish boys were severely outgunned.

Tamani looks quite a prospect.
