On this day, 96 years ago, Margaret Bondfield was appointed to the cabinet, becoming the first woman to hold such a position in the UK.

She also became the first female Privy Councillor and had earlier become the first woman to chair the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

A former shop assistant, she was the original “Maggie” in the cabinet. Some say, the only Maggie in reality.
