Well this slipped under my radar. Australia is having yet another crack at setting up a 2nd Tier professional competition to fill the gap between Super Rugby (Pacific) and semi-pro club competitions.
It’s called Super Rugby AUS - not to be confused with the pandemic fill-in Super Rugby AU competition.
This is a 4-round robin involving the four Aussie Super Rugby teams, with a final played the day after the last Bledisloe test.
Good on them, I guess, but I’m not sure how having a spin-off involving the same old teams will help build depth, other than needing to bring in players while Wallabies are in camp.
As a side note - how many “Super” competitions have there been now?
There’s been at least:
Super 12
Super 14
Super Rugby
Super Rugby Women’s
Super Rugby Aupiki
Super Rugby AU
Super Rugby Pacific
Super Rugby Americas
Super Rugby Aotearoa
Super Rugby Trans-Tasman
Super Rugby Unlocked
Super Rugby AUS
